Boarders & Custom Design & Staircases

 Custom Design and Inlays

Custom designs are geometric figures that are primarily premade, but can be created based on customer specifications.  Custom designs come in all wood species, tile, and granite.  The most common custom designs are medallions such as compasses or enclosed geometric figures such as ovals, squares, hexagons, and stars.  Depending on the design there are often matching boarders that can accompany and accent the piece.  Corporations can also have their logos and brand name inlayed in a design in their firm’s hardwood to establish brand identity.

Manufacturers can match the thickness of most manufactured and solid woods creating a smooth transition from hardwoods to design piece.

Medallions are most commonly placed in entry ways as a center piece, but are also popular in formal dining rooms, on the edge of staircases, and in bonus rooms.

Boarders

Boarders add aesthetics to your home with rich accents and dramatic color.  They come in many different designs and sizes ranging from elaborate to simple transitional pieces. Many boarders include a feature strip. A feature strip is a different species of wood inlayed into the boarder that enhances and accents the design.

They are most common in dining rooms, but many choose to inlay a boarder throughout their entire house. Boarders give the look and feel of an accent rug, but without the damaging effects.

 Hardwood Staircase

A misconception about installing hardwoods on your staircase is that people will be more prone to falling or slipping on the stairs; when the opposite is true. Hardwood staircases create a more solid footing in comparison with carpeted stairs. Wood stairs also provide easy clean-up with a broom or a damp cloth.

Any species of wood can be applied on a staircase. There is the option to have hardwoods on both the tread and riser, or hardwoods on the tread and a paint grade on the riser. Cost is dependent on the species of wood chosen as well as the type of staircase (enclosed, spiral, or rounded).

Terminology:

Risers: The riser is the vertical element in-between steps forming the space between each lift in the stairs.

Treads: The flat top of the step where the foot is placed.

Skirtboards: Runs along the sides of the staircase to prevent wall scuffing and damage. The skirtboard adds a finished look to enclosed staircases.

Pickets: Come in several different styles and products such as wood, paint grade, or rod iron posts that run along the side of the staircase. One – three pickets on each step depending on the staircase.
